Economic Management for Sustainability (GECOS)

GECOS – Introduction

The Official Gazette of Castilla y León (BOCYL) published on December 30th, 2020, the resolution of economic support to the strategic plans and strategic research programs executed by the research structures of excellence of Castilla y León. It recognizes the Excellence Unit ‘Economic Management for Sustainability’ (GECOS) of the Multidisciplinary Business Institute (IME, by its acronym in Spanish), with reference number CLU-2019-03, to which € 400,000 is awarded until 2024. This way, GECOS becomes the flagship research unit of the IME.

The economic support is granted under the framework of the Regional Strategy for Research and Innovation for Smart Specialization (RIS3, by its acronym in Spanish) of Castilla y León 2014-2020 and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union. Now, both GECOS and the IME will be able to better fulfill their mission, generate capacities in people and organizations, and maximize their contribution to the economic development of Salamanca and beyond.

Furthermore, the current complex context caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus makes GECOS’s work and contribution even more crucial: ​​to generate knowledge to develop environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable business models. Therefore, the funds received recognize and increase the IME’s ability to provide support to companies and individuals by making its cutting-edge knowledge available.

GECOS – Research

The Unit of Excellence GECOS has the purpose of analysing and answering the business problems applying a multidisciplinary point of view. In GECOS, sustainability is understood in its three main aspects: environmental, social, and economic. Therefore, when examining a problem, GECOS employs this complete sustainability concept, allowing the Unit to identify business structures that facilitate sustainable management. The search for these business structures and corporate processes is the unifying thread of our lines of research.

The Unit’s scholars actively collaborate in scientific activities such as publications, conferences, seminars, and research stay with other research institutions of international reputation. Among them are KU Leuven, Queen Mary, University of London, University of Salerno, Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, Lancaster University, Portland State University, University of Groningen, Cass Business School, Polytechnic Institute of Guarda , Università di Catania, Universität Hamburg, Philipps-Universität Marburg, University of Leeds, the University of Queensland and the University of Adelaide.

GECOS’s partnerships will be strengthened in the coming years and new networks will be forged with institutions in emerging countries, especially in the Asian continent, such as China, Pakistan, India, and Indonesia. Likewise, our researchers participate in six international alliances such as Water Future, where one of our members is chair of the working group Economic Instruments of Water Security.

Bellow the four research groups that constitute the Unit of Excellence CLU-2019-03 “Economic Management for Sustainability” of the University of Salamanca are introduced.

GECOS – Activities

  • Scopus

Scopus is the largest database of citations and abstracts of peer-reviewed bibliography with scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings. Offering a comprehensive summary of global research results in the fields of science, technology, medicine, the social sciences, and the arts and humanities, Scopus includes smart tools to track, analyse, and visualize research.

This tool is a reference when calculating the impact and citations of the publications. In most of the projects’ calls, this database is used to assess the research merits of the authors.

To facilitate the use of the tool, the IME and GECOS provide a guide to check the impact and know if a publication is Q1 or not.

  • SJR

SCImago Journal Rank (acronym SJR) is a statistical index that measures the scientific influence of academic journals according to the number of citations in other important media, newspapers, or magazines.  The SJR index of a journal is a numerical value that indicates the average number of weighted citations received during a selected year by documents published in that journal during the previous three years. Higher values ​​of the SJR index should indicate a greater prestige of the medium or magazine/newspaper.
